Well it's clear that it is 3rd for everyone since Amber wasn't there.

I was telling my friend about this season yesterday and my summary was, "They should just take Probst out back and shoot him, because there's no way
this season could be topped." Instead of reviving the show, I say they kill it off and go out on top!
Vanuatu probably remains my favorite season, since everything went right from start to finish. Pre-merge booted the dull, uninteresting and overly irritating. Post-merge had all likable characters and great game play. This season had the best post-merge play ever - and generally great gaming all around - but the pre-merge was heartbreaking. Personal preference aside, the overall quality of this last season does make it tops. |

Power boots simply by the fattest and most useless of the guys. No respect there whatsoever from me. Especially since a major reason why he ended up in that
situation in the first place was by "masterminding" the whole "let's boot our strong guys ASAP" pre-merge strategy, causing the
remaining guys to be outnumbered by the girls at the merge. And then he had to be beaten over the head by Twila to see how he could come together with the
eventual final four. And finally, he would have quite possibly lost the whole thing anyway if Twila hadn't committed one of the biggest suicide moves in
the show's history with that whole "I swear on my son" thing. Bottom line is that Chris is quite possibly the only Survivor winner that I
don't have one single shred of respect for, and that's why I'll never be able to consider Vanuatu as one the very, very best seasons.

Eh, sometimes when you're behind on numbers your only move is to outlast the others until circumstances change. Chris did a good job of that and his
relationships with Julie and Twila helped. Danni did the exact same thing- weaseled around to avoid the boot while her old allies got picked off until she got
herself into a better alliance. And I'm not going to begrudge a guy for picking alliance members that he trusted over buff younger guys he didn't. He
did get totally played by Julie and Twila into kicking off John K, however.

I think that those four all at least did a little bit to earn their wins. Chris gets bascially no respect from me. I think that his win was skewed so hugely toward luck with so little skill involved that he shouldn't be considered a good gameplayer. I mean, if I recall correctly, even the editors couldn't do much of anything to salvage him--his winner's edit was essentially "the Vanuatu gods ordained that a man would win this season, and Chris was the only dumbass they had left to work with." |

He was in a bad position after Julie and Twila played him. He worked to outlast his allies and waited for a time to make his move. That time came, he took it,
then controlled the new alliance to victory. It's not flashy, but he wasn't in a position where flash would do him any good.

'Parv, on the other hand, I would say is probably at least in the upper 50% of winners to date. I never in a million years could have imagined this, but
I actually have to give her some serious credit.'

On a random side note, I remember in the first season I really didn't care about a "good strategic winner." I was really into the fact that one
person would get booted each week and somehow the ultimate Survivor would rise to the top. I think I would actually be perfectly happy if it was still that
way. That said, I do like strategy even if game discussion has become 90% of what we're shown out there.
I think Chris was a lucky winner, and a classless winner, but I think he was somewhat proactive in his victory. The stupid, arbitrary decision to "boot the young guys" except for Chad was cooked up between him and Sarge. It was a dumb thought process, but it worked. He was manipulated by Julie and Twila to boot John K. and subsequently lost most of his alliance and any hope of winning after taking out Rory. His decisions only started to really cook when he was working his endgame...but as someone pointed out Twila had a lot to do with that. Hell, I think I just convinced myself that he was pretty terrible. My vote for the "worst winner," if there is such a thing is still Jenna. From what I recollect, she didn't have a whole lot of power in her old tribe. During the shuffle up she didn't strike me as one making any ideas and the merge game was essentially a Rob/Deena show 'till Deena wanted to boot Alex. The only real decision we saw her make was getting angry at Deena, and even then it was Rob doing most of the plotting. I truly don't remember a single thing Jenna did to secure victory other than winning the final two immunity challenges and taking Matt instead of Rob. She was in dominate alliance most of the time as well, she was just never a power player or, really, someone that struck me as that interesting. Vecepia, to me, has always been kinda underrated. I don't think she was stunning as a winner, but she picked the right style of play for that game. She was UTR, but I never got the impression she was being strung along by a more aggressive player. In Marquesas, alliances were firing back and forth at each other and laying low was the perfect way to dodge all of it. |

I give Jenna credit for playing a very good social game. With the sole exception of the Alex boot, she had her finger on the pulse of everything. She never
needed the control that Deena felt she needed and she was much better at reading the group than Deena and consequently never made a Deena-type mistake. From
everything we heard post-game, the jury actually really did respect her game. I, too, would put her as one of the "worst" winners in Survivor, but to
be honest I think of all the winners she'd be one of the best at excelling in any situation, not just the one she was in during her season, up there with
Tom, Brian, Rich, and maybe Yul.

I think Yul and Rich were both flexible enough to earn that distinction, but I feel Tom had potential for an early merge boot had his tribe not been in complete control of the pre-merge situation. Coby was very willing to defect as was Gregg to a certain degree. It's a little hard to determine, especially because imagining how he'd react in a different situation is a big hypothetical, but Tom W. always seemed to me like a player who's style fit his season well. He mindfucked Ian well enough and I think he played Caryn like a fiddle. While I had a distaste for the Tom W. character as presented, he's a fine winner. I do think considering his strength and leadership he would have been targeted in games where it wasn't dominated so completely by one team. |
