"In the Aeroplane Over the Sea" is one of my favorite songs. Ever.
That whole album is great, though. |

Is that the soundtrack to the Spongebob Squarepants movie?

Never occurred to me how goofy those titles look out of context. Those cute little Elephant 6 bands and their pseudopsychedelia.
Oz, you're right, that whole record is awesome. I'm ashamed I didn't get it until this year, though I was familiar with "Ghosts" for several years as a result of the single most excellent mix tape anyone's ever made me... |

Nothin' like a little good old fashioned anarchist calypso anthem. |

Quote: It's no anarchist calypso anthem, but it does capture the angst of youth so well. |

Just got back from the concert. Woo! Here's my review:
Regina Spektor: Poor lass got to be the opener. Both my friend and I are big Regina fans, so it was so sad to see her play to a sparse crowd. She was excellent though, and the crowd that was there had a good time. Her voice was powerful and pure and it great to see her do stuff like "Poor Little Rich Boy," which involves her playing piano with one hand and doing percussion with the other. She also tried her hand at guitar, despite her skill level with it being about even with mine. I really hope she does the club circuit again. She'd be so much fun in a small venue. Maximo Park: I had never heard of these guys and didn't even know they were playing until I checked the website this morning. While they were performing, we kept joking that they should change their name to "Plagiarism" because their sound was so similar to many bands we knew. Fortunately, every band they emulated I happen to like a lot. A little Franz Ferdinand, a little Smiths, a little Talking Heads and a dash of Killers flair. The band was into it, they had tons of hooks and they did everything I'd want to do if I had a band. Maximo Park rocked. They may just be a "me too" band, but they do it *really* well. Louis XIV: Take everything positive I just said about Maximo Park and the opposite is true for this band. They were awful. Their music was all fuzz, the songs sounded the same, the vocals were weak and the singer wasn't even fun to watch. The Maximo dude did hilariously pretentious hand gestures and dancing...Louis XIV dude just proved that some people really want to look like a retarded ozzy osbourn circa 1983. We spent the middle of the set waiting in line to buy shaved ice. We went to concessions, found the longest line there, stuck ourselves on the end of it and had a much better time. For those who have heard their single: That chicky/castrato voice is even creepier live. When the keyboardist opened his mouth and that stuff came out I didn't know whether to laugh or cry. Keane: Ahhh, relief. By now everyone was here to see the headliners and the energy level was clearly high. They were amazing! I've only had the Keane album for a day, but that hinder my enjoyment at all. I knew the singles and I was familiar enough with the standout songs I could rock along with them. The singer has a great voice and, after the Louis XIV guy, he didn't look nearly as hideous as normal. Fun aside: Maximo Park, Louis XIV and Keane are all british bands. When they came out, they gave us a big old, "Hello, Columbia!" I can tell you guys, most people there didn't even realize they were in Columbia, MD. This is a concert venue between D.C. and Baltimore. American bands know to say, "Hello, Baltimore/Washington Area!" but the poor brits had no clue. The Killers: Jeebus, these guys are popular! The audience was singing along so loud they threatened to overtake Brandon Flowers' vocals. They came in with high energy and hit all my favorites from their album. They did not disappoint! I even broke down and bought a t-shirt after vowing to save my money. It didn't help that The Killers had some kickass shirts to offer. I end up buying an olive drab shirt that from a distance looked like a bomb design. In truth, it's...uh...I have no idea. My friend called it a satellite, I call it a party popper. Whatever. From a distance it looks like a bomb and that matches my B-52's shirt, so I bought it. So it was a successful evening. 4/5 acts were great and the 5th act gave us a chance to take a snack break. Victory! No, as for my current jukebox song, it's "Psychobabble" by Frou Frou. *time passes* Gee, it would help if had hit the post button... so now Bjork's "Hidden Place" is playing. |
